Rather than just one garden, the six acres surrounding the ruins of the Abbey have become a group of gardens, separated by the many natural features of the site. After the laying of the lawns, and planting of bushes and rock plants to hide the ravages of the archaeological digging around the ruins, the swimming pool, in the shape of a snail, was dug under one of the many retaining walls and surrounded by hedges on three sides to provide privacy. From the pool, on the North side, guests can look over the croquet lawn to the Japanese Garden below and out over the valley of the Resina to the distant hills. The solar heated pool, of about 15 x 8 metres, has a shallow part and a circular area for diving of 3.5 metres in depth. The gardens contain a spectacular array of plants and trees that have been chosen to provide colour throughout the warm Spring and hot Summer seasons. The recently completed Japanese Garden is just a short walk down from the swimming pool via the croquet lawn or can be accessed via a newly installed Ortensia-lined stairway on the far side of the Abbey. Two thirds of the way down a beautiful Wisteria clad pergola, sitting adjacent to the floodlit Bocce Court, provides a natural gateway to the Japanese Garden.
The principal pond at the centre of the Japanese Garden is home to over 50 spectacular koi carp in addition to no less than 30 different varieites of water lilly and lotus flowers. The smaller pond contains a number of prize winning koi carp, including several champions from both Japan and European koi shows. The Abbadia Celestina koi are the largest and most important collection of koi in all of Europe. The main Pagoda provides a unique and cosy environment for up to 12 people to relax, read, listen to music and enjoy the, vista and enchanting setting of the gardens. The decking area at the back of the Pagoda, surrounded by numerous bonsai, is the perfect location to enjoy a relaxing massage (which can be booked with 24 hours notice). On the opposite side of the house, yet another terrace with seating for 4 provides an ideal place for relaxation and refreshments after an energetic game of tennis on the nearby all weather tennis court, or cooling off after a visit to the jacuzzi (hot tub). The gardens , which are maintained by 3 full time gardeners, provide discerning guests with a unique and restful paradise to unwind and relax - with secluded and quiet corners, wonderful vistas and a profusion of glorious plants.
